Finnish technology group Wärtsilä Corp (HEL:WRT1V) has been contracted by a unit of EDF Renewables (EDFR) to supply 100 MW/200 MWh of energy storage systems for projects in England’s West Midlands.
Wärtsilä said in a statement that its batteries will support the roll-out of Pivot Power’s Energy Superhub model. They will be installed at two sites in the city of Coventry and the borough of Sandwell, on the outskirts of Birmingham, and will facilitate the integration of more renewable energy on the grid.
Construction work will start at Sandwell in the fourth quarter of the year and at Coventry in the opening quarter of 2022.
The Finnish company is already providing 50 MW of energy storage to Pivot Power for the Energy Superhub Oxford (ESO) and a further 50 MW in Kemsley, Kent. It notes that the ESO project will include the largest lithium-ion and vanadium-flow hybrid grid-scale energy storage system in the world. It will be delivered in partnership with Invinity Energy Systems and will support the development of a high-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging network.
