On 26 June, Geng Shuang, Foreign Ministry’s spokesman, chaired the regular press conference. As a U.S. official noted that the U.S. and China agreed not to levy new tariffs, but the U.S. won’t cancel current tariffs to restart trade talks. A reporter wondered China’s reply to such comments and whether China and the U.S. will reach a trade agreement.
In respond to this, Geng Shuang said China takes a clear stand over the China-U.S. trade talks and always recommends solving China-U.S. trade frictions through dialogue and consultation. During this process, the two parties should respect each other, adhere to the principle of equality and mutual benefit and pay attention to reasonable concerns of the other party. The U.S. has a clear mind about China’s stand. Trade frictions and additional tariffs harm both parties and cannot solve the problem.
