Foreign Ministry: U.S. Announcement on China’s White Paper Confuses Right and Wrong

In response to U.S. government’s ‘disappointment’ at the white paper released by China, Geng Shuang, Foreign Ministry’s spokesman, said on 4 June that U.S. government’s announcement confused right and wrong and argued irrationally and recommended the U.S. to read China’s two white papers carefully and stop being opinionated and talking to itself.

At the regular press conference, a reporter mentioned that the U.S. trade representative office and the U.S. Department of the Treasury released a joint announcement on 3 June, showing disappointment at China’s recent white paper. The announcement blamed China once again for ‘going back on its word’ and declared that U.S. government’s actions aimed to stop China from unfair trade practices.

“The announcement of the U.S. completely confused right and wrong and argued irrationally,” replied Geng Shuang. China released a white paper on 2 June, describing China-U.S. trade talks in a complete and accurate manner and telling the truth. The white paper clearly narrated that the two countries suffered setbacks during the trade talks as the U.S. failed to keep faith, violated consensus and acted dishonestly. The U.S. blamed China for ‘going back on its word’, which completely distorted the facts and made unfounded countercharges.

As for ‘unfair trade practices’, Geng Shuang said that China released a white paper on 24 September, 2018, giving official response to and comments on U.S. false accusations against China in trade deficit, intellectual property right and technology transfer, and considered the latest announcement from the U.S. government as the same old tune.

According to Geng Shuang, the right way to solve trade friction is negotiation. Reaching a mutual-beneficial and win-win agreement on the basis of mutual respect, equality and integrity will not only benefit interests of China and the U.S., but also meet general expectation of the international community.

“Additional tariffs will harm the U.S. rather than enable it to be stronger,” Geng Shuang said, adding that China is determined and capable of protecting its legal rights and hoping the U.S. to get a clear understanding of the situation as early as possible, go back on track and meet China halfway.
